Placer Deposits

placer-depositsWe are now going to dig into all of the various methods of actually recovering gold from the earth.  There are many ways of doing this and much of it depends on where you are looking for the gold.  In this case, we will discuss placer deposits.  So what is a placer deposit?  Let’s check it out.

In geological terms, placer deposits are areas where very valuable minerals are accumulated and collected.  This is done by gravity, which separates the minerals, hopefully gold in our case, from the rest of the soil during the sedimentary processes that occur while the water in a stream is rushing about.  This term is derived from the Spanish language word placer, which has the definition of “alluvial sand.”  Alluvial sand is basically loose soil that has been removed, reshaped, and redeposited somewhere, in this case it is deposited in placer deposits where we can easily sift through it and find out precious gold nuggets.

Gold Mines

gold-minesMost of what we will talk about has to do with placer deposits for mining gold, and most of the methods of gold extraction will be placer methods, however it is worth mentioning that there are other types of locations to recover gold from, but they aren’t usually places that individuals and small groups will have access to.  One of those types of places are gold mines.  Gold mines are nothing like the placer deposits that form at the bases of waterfalls and around river and stream bends.

Gold mines are man made caves that are dug out or dug down into the earth in an attempt to find gold veins that are hidden from view.  There are large pieces of gold all throughout certain portions of land and embedded in giant rocks.  So looking in streams is not always the answer.  If you have the large mining equipment to bust apart the rocks and filter them down, perhaps using sluices, cradles, and trommels you will be in good shape.  But this is usually limited to larger companies who have the money to lease, rent, or buy these enormous pieces of machinery needed.

Gold Deposits

gold-depositsWhen the phrase “gold deposits” comes up, it is in reference to places where there is a boatload of gold.  Now, this refers to a lot of different types of areas, such as gold mines, gold claims, gold placer deposits, and even within the placer deposit category we have residual deposits, alluvial deposits, glory holes, and more.

A gold mine is a man made excavation created to gain access to a gold vein, which is a location where much gold has been formed and is ripe for the recovery.  It takes large machinery and a lot of money to purchase land to be able to construct a gold mine, but if you can get ahold of these types of gold deposits, you will be rich without question.  Other types of gold deposits are the gold claims, which are essentially any mixture of the other types of gold deposits, and someone has just laid claim to the area as the one who gets to mine it first.

Gold Claims

gold-claimsGold claims are an interesting topic.  They contain gold mines and placer deposits.  What they really are is just a plot of land, but not just any old plot of land.  Gold claims are plots of land that someone has discovered gold on, whether this be in a creek, stream, river, or loose sediment just out in the field.  What happens though is a person stakes claim to the land and they are granted the right to mine on the land exclusively.

A gold claim essentially allows the discoverer the privileged right to have first pickings over the land.  This acts as an incentive for the finder to invest his time (because it takes time to raise money and gather equipment) and the money needed to develop the gold claim.  Of course you can’t just round up the boys and start digging.  Check with the local jurisdiction to figure out exactly what is allowed or not.
