Gold Extraction

gold-extractionGold extraction, sometimes known as gold recovery, is the process of extracting the gold form the surrounding ores.  This is can include any combination of certain procedures such as comminution, pyrometallurgical processes, mineral processing, and hydrometallurgical processing.

What these mean, in the same order, is crushing and grinding to reduce the size of the rocks, using heat and fire to remove the metals, different ways of crushing again, and using water to extract the gold.

Gold Dredging

gold-dredgingAs we continue to dig deeper (no pun intended!) into gold mining techniques, we will look another method which is calledgold dredging.  This is another type of placer mining, which is extracting gold from the black sand that collects in placer deposits.  The previous method of placer mining we discussed was gold panning, however gold dredging is more advanced and more efficient.  So what the heck is this thing?  Is it big or small?  Does it require engines and laborers or is it automated?  Let’s figure this thing out!

Gold Cradle

gold-cradleAs we continue to talk about placer deposits and placer mining, since this is the method accessible to us hobbyists, we will mention another method of extracting and recovering gold from these deposits.  One of the ways this is done is using what is called a gold cradle, or occasionally a gold rocker.

A gold cradle is essentially a giant rocker, just like you’d imagine a baby being in.  It is mechanical and rocks back and forth and performs the same function as a gold pan, except for it is automated and can hold a lot more earth than a hand held pan.  It essentially is built with a box on rocking horse legs and can be moved by hand, or in the present you can have it mechanically moved by a motor.  It was used to process soil that held gold by washing the dirt off of the gold and letting it slosh out the side, leaving only the valuable, beautiful gold.
